African Union asks Putin for a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine

Moscow (BLAZETRENDS).- The African Union (AU) today asked Russian President Vladimir Putin for a ceasefire in Ukraine at the end of the Russia-Africa summit held in Saint Petersburg.

“We must achieve a ceasefire (in Ukraine) as war is always unpredictable. The longer it lasts, the more unpredictable it becomes. Putin showed that he is ready for dialogue, ”said Azali Assoumani, AU acting chairman at the end of the Russia-Africa summit in St. Petersburg.

Assoumani, who alluded to the ten-point peace plan presented to Moscow and kyiv by the African countries, stressed that “now we must convince the other party.”

“We act as mediators. We will talk to both sides. I hope we will achieve positive results, ”he said.

Putin will speak “with interested African countries”

For his part, Putin assured that tonight he will speak “with interested African countries” about the situation around Ukraine.

The African peace plan includes, among other points, a de-escalation, the cessation of hostilities, a political settlement to the conflict and security guarantees for both parties.

The final declaration of the second Russia-Africa summit does not include any reference to the war in Ukraine, but condemns “aggressive nationalism, neo-Nazism and neo-fascism”.
