Actor-turned-politician Vijay released the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) candidate list for the 2026 Tamil Nadu assembly elections on Sunday. The announcement fundamentally alters the state’s political calculus. India is currently navigating a massive, high-stakes wave of multi-state assembly elections scheduled throughout April. These concurrent electoral battles across Tamil Nadu, Kerala, West Bengal, Assam, and Puducherry serve as a critical stress test for entrenched regional governments facing aggressive challenges from national coalitions and newly formed populist parties.
The scale of India’s state elections consistently makes them some of the largest democratic exercises in the world. In Tamil Nadu, the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) is now bracing for a highly fractured opposition vote.
Vijay confirmed his own electoral debut during Sunday’s press event in Chennai. He will contest from two distinct constituencies. He selected Perambur in Chennai and Tiruchi East in the central district. The dual-constituency strategy places the party founder directly on the front lines of the campaign.

He forcefully defended his party’s political newcomers. Addressing reporters during the announcement of the candidates list on Sunday, Vijay stated, “TVK candidates are protectors of people. They may say our candidates are inexperienced, but our candidates are from humble background.”
He dismissed the broader field of competitors entirely. He framed the upcoming April 23 vote as a direct clash with the ruling government. “This election is only a two cornered contest between TVK and DMK,” Vijay added, according to live reporting published by The Hindu.
The established political heavyweights finalized their rosters just hours prior. The DMK announced its list of 164 candidates on Saturday. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin will seek reelection from the Kolathur constituency. Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin will again contest from Chepauk-Tiruvallikeni.
Simultaneously, the broader national electoral machinery remains in high gear. Prime Minister Narendra Modi traveled to Kerala on Sunday to lead the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) campaign. His schedule included a rally in Palakkad and a planned 900-meter roadshow along the Swaraj Round in Thrissur. The BJP is attempting to secure a rare electoral foothold in the state following a zero-seat finish in the 2021 assembly cycle.
Voting in Tamil Nadu is scheduled to take place in a single phase on April 23, 2026. Officials will count the votes for all participating states and union territories on May 4.
