Acquired Discord bot from Axie Infinity; hackers share fake message

The now popular Play-to-Earn NFT video game, Axie Infinity, has faced another attack on its Discord server. This now led to a compromise of his MEE6 bot.

The MEE6 Discord bot

MEE6 on Discord is a popular bot mainly used for automating roles and messaging and used by numerous crypto projects. The attackers, in turn, used the compromised bot to add permissions to a fake Jiho account. Later they shared a false announcement about a coin.

The developers managed to remove the compromised MEE6 bot from the main server and also delete the fake messages. the official Twitter account of the project warned that many users could still see the fake message until they restart their Discord.

MEE6 compromise not new

Unfortunately, the fact that the MEE6 bot has been taken over does not appear to be a new phenomenon. Several Discord projects have already had similar problems. However, the official MEE6 Discord support channel denied allegations of a hack, claiming that they verified it with their techs and saw no unusual activity.

Many believe that the hackers compromised the administrator accounts first and then gained access to the alternate administrator account using MEE6. This helped them send web book messages while hiding the compromised administrator account.

The Discord bot compromise comes within a month of one of the largest raids on Axie Infinity’s Ronin Bridge, resulting in a loss of more than $600 million in crypto assets. The recent series of security breaches has significantly lowered community trust in the game, which was once seen as a revolutionary project for the game world. However, the latest hack doesn’t seem to be entirely Axie Infinity’s fault.
