Aamir Khan has no regrets over rejecting Shah Rukh's Darr

The year was 1992 when Shah Rukh Khan took his first step into the world of Bollywood with the film “Deewana.” Following this debut, he went on to appear in a string of movies, including “Chamatkar,” “Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman,” “Dil Aashna Hai,” “Maya Memsaab,” “Pehla Nasha,” and “King Uncle.” However, it wasn’t until the release of “Baazigar” and “Darr” in 1993 that SRK’s career truly skyrocketed to new heights. These films were unique in that they featured the hero in a negative role, a character trait that led several actors, including Aamir Khan, to turn down the opportunity to star in them.

Recently, 31 years after the release of “Darr,” Aamir Khan revealed that he has no regrets about passing on the film. Directed by Yash Chopra, “Darr” was the movie that catapulted Shah Rukh Khan to the status of Bollywood’s reigning king, becoming a blockbuster hit that year. Initially, the role of Rahul Mehra was offered to Aamir Khan, but after he declined, the part went to Shah Rukh. At a recent event, Aamir Khan discussed “Darr” once again, stating that he doesn’t regret his decision to turn down the film.

Aamir Has No Regrets

Aamir Khan spoke at a PVR INOX event, saying, “I was initially supposed to do ‘Darr,’ but I decided not to due to other reasons. The film was made very well, and Shah Rukh was perfect for the role. Yash ji was trying to infuse a certain spirit into the film through me… if I had done it, it would have been wrong. I don’t regret not doing it.” This sentiment highlights Aamir’s thoughtful approach to his film choices, often prioritizing the integrity of the project over personal gain.

Javed Akhtar Praises Aamir

Also present at the event was Javed Akhtar, who praised Aamir Khan for his unique approach to film selection. Akhtar mentioned, “Aamir’s magic lies in his willingness to invest in unconventional films. I told him not to do ‘Lagaan’ and tried to persuade him against it. I even made a list of things not to do and built a script around it.” This exchange demonstrates the respect and admiration that exists between Aamir Khan and his peers in the industry.

The Cast of “Darr”

“Darr: A Violent Love Story” is a psychological thriller directed by Yash Chopra under the Yash Raj Films banner, with Chopra also serving as the producer. The film stars Sunny Deol and Juhi Chawla in lead roles, while Shah Rukh Khan plays the part of a stalker. The supporting cast includes Annu Kapoor, Tanvi Azmi, Anupam Kher, and Dalip Tahil. Released in 1993, “Darr” remains a significant milestone in the careers of its cast and crew, showcasing the darker side of love and obsession.
