Iran activates emergency alert as severe storm system engulfs 25 provinces

A massive meteorological front is currently sweeping across the Middle East. The system is triggering severe flash floods, blocked rural roads, and power outages across the region. Iran’s Crisis Management Organization placed all Red Crescent emergency operational teams on high alert Thursday. The Iran Meteorological Organization issued an official “Orange Warning” as a severe new precipitation system struck the country. Initially targeting 18 provinces, the storm’s footprint expanded rapidly. As of late Thursday, active precipitation and severe weather disruptions are battering 25 different provinces.

The heaviest precipitation is actively targeting Kermanshah, Ilam, Lorestan, northern Khuzestan, and northern Fars. Western and southern regions are taking the brunt of the heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and localized hail. Mountainous areas are facing heavy snowfall, severe blizzards, and dense fog. Meanwhile, eastern and central regions are preparing for strong winds and potential dust storms.

Tehran is not spared. The capital is experiencing partly cloudy skies with severe wind gusts. The maximum temperature reached 16 degrees Celsius.

The government banned all maritime activities in the south. The Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman are highly turbulent, disrupting one of the most vital shipping lanes in the world. Wave heights are expected to exceed 1.8 meters. Domestic news agencies are tracking the widespread disruptions, though international wires have not yet mobilized to cover the localized damage.
