Atlético Madrid defeated Tottenham Hotspur 5-2 in the first leg of their Champions League round-of-16 tie on Tuesday at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano. The defeat marks Tottenham’s sixth consecutive loss across all competitions, a first in the club’s history. The team currently sits one point above the Premier League relegation zone with nine domestic matches remaining.
Tottenham conceded four goals in the opening 25 minutes. Interim manager Igor Tudor substituted 22-year-old goalkeeper Antonín Kinský in the 17th minute following two errors that directly resulted in Atlético goals.
Kinský slipped during a short goal-kick routine, allowing Ademola Lookman to find Julián Álvarez, who passed to Marcos Llorente for the opening goal. Defender Micky van de Ven then lost his footing on the pitch, enabling Antoine Griezmann to score Atlético’s second goal.
For the third goal, Kinský kicked a routine pass off his own leg, leaving Álvarez with an open net. Tudor immediately replaced Kinský with Guglielmo Vicario. The 17th-minute change ties Grégory Coupet for the earliest goalkeeper substitution in Champions League knockout-stage history.
Midfielder Pape Sarr headed the ball toward his own net, forcing a save from Vicario before Robin Le Normand tapped in the rebound to give Atlético a 4-0 advantage. Taking a four-goal lead in 25 minutes is the second-earliest such occurrence in the tournament’s history. The result leaves Tottenham facing a steep deficit in the new Champions League format ahead of the return fixture.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Tudor said the early substitution was made to “protect” and “preserve” the young goalkeeper amidst a fragile team environment. Tudor has lost his first four matches since assuming the interim managerial role.
Tottenham will face Atlético Madrid for the second leg in London.
