Lautaro Martínez Denies Chivu Rift: ‘Hugs Me More Than My Wife’

Inter Milan forward Lautaro Martínez has publicly dismissed speculation of tension with coach Cristian Chivu, using a humorous anecdote to emphasize their strong working relationship.

The Argentina international addressed the rumors at the Gran Galà del Calcio AIC, an awards ceremony for Italian football’s top performers.

Martínez, who was recognized as one of Serie A’s top three forwards for the 2024/25 season, spoke after being frequently substituted in recent matches.

“Everything is great between us, we talk every day,” the 28-year-old said. “He is constantly hugging us, perhaps even too much. He hugs me more than my wife, but that is his way of working.”

Martínez praised Chivu’s approach, noting the coach’s past as a player at the club helps him understand the team dynamic.

“It’s nice because he was also a player in this same locker room and understands everything that happens,” Martínez added.

Martínez has not played a full 90 minutes for Inter since their 3-1 defeat to Napoli on October 25.

Despite recent substitutions, he scored two goals in Inter’s 2-0 victory over Pisa last Saturday.

“We needed a coach like him,” Martínez stated. “He gives us freedom, confidence and tells us that we have to show all our qualities on the field. I am happy with the way his period here at Inter has started.”
