A new Gordon Murray Automotive S1 LM supercar set a record in Las Vegas, becoming the most expensive new car ever sold at auction at $20.63 million.
The sale took place during the Formula 1 weekend, where the exhibition model was dramatically lowered onto the RM Sotheby’s auction site by helicopter.
This particular S1 LM was notable as Gordon Murray Automotive had previously announced in August, during Monterey Car Week, that all five available cars had been purchased by a single collector. One of these cars subsequently appeared at auction.
The unnamed winning bidder will engage directly with designer Gordon Murray to personalize every detail of their S1 LM.
They will also participate in development tests with veteran race car driver Dario Franchitti while the Gordon Murray Special Vehicles team fine-tunes the car.
The S1 LM is engineered as a modern interpretation of the iconic McLaren F1. It is powered by a custom-developed 4.3-liter naturally aspirated Cosworth V12 engine, similar to the one found in the T.50 model.
This engine delivers approximately 700 horsepower and can reach 12,100 revolutions per minute. It is paired with a six-speed manual transmission, driving the rear wheels.
Gordon Murray designed the S1 LM to be exceptionally lightweight, with a total mass of just 957 kilograms.
