Futsal winger Marta Teixeira has joined Portugal’s national women’s team for their historic first World Cup, stepping in as a last-minute replacement and expressing a focus on team contribution.
Teixeira was called up by coach Luís Conceição after the squad had already arrived in Manila. She replaces Raquel Santos, a player from Benfica.
This marks a repeat scenario for Teixeira, who previously filled in for Carolina Pedreira during the elite qualification round. She views the late call-up as a “vote of confidence.”
“Regardless of being called later, I handle it the same way as if I were called for the first time or in the first call-up. I was extremely happy, nonetheless,” Teixeira told Canal 11.
She stated that she is already integrated into the team’s strategy and expectations. “My thinking is always: I’m just one more to help,” she affirmed, emphasizing her focus during training.
Portugal is set to make its World Cup debut on Sunday at 2:30 PM local time in Manila (6:30 AM UTC). Their first opponent will be Tanzania.
Teixeira described Tanzania as a “physically strong” team. Portugal’s strategy will involve playing fast and attempting to break through their defense.
Portugal’s subsequent matches in Group C include Japan on November 26, followed by New Zealand three days later.
