Galaxy Z Fold 7 Propels Samsung Past Apple in Global Smartphone Market

Samsung has once again outpaced Apple in global smartphone shipments, solidifying its market leadership, driven largely by the strong performance of its foldable devices.

Industry reports indicate that Samsung maintained its top position, securing 19% of the global smartphone market share. This compares to Apple’s 18%, despite Apple also experiencing year-over-year growth.

According to a report from Omdia, Samsung’s global smartphone shipments increased by 6%, rising from 57.5 million units to 60.6 million units in the third quarter of 2025. These figures represent the latest data available since the launch of the Galaxy Z Fold 7.

Apple also saw an increase in shipments, growing by 4% compared to the previous year. The overall global market share for both tech giants has remained largely consistent.

The success of Samsung’s foldable lineup, specifically the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and the Galaxy Flip 7, was credited with driving the company’s growth. While specific sales figures for these models were not released, the Omdia report highlighted their significant contribution.

This marks the second consecutive year that Samsung has held the lead over Apple, following its initial overtake in 2024. Both companies have recorded growth for two consecutive years, recovering from a decline experienced in 2023.

Despite the strong performance of its foldables, the Galaxy S25 series reportedly achieved only moderate success. Samsung’s own recent financial results detailed plans for upcoming flagship smartphones but omitted some specific details for the current year.

Looking ahead, Samsung is preparing for the launch of its innovative Galaxy TriFold device. The company showcased the incredibly thin foldable at APEC 2025, though many questions about the product remain unanswered.

The Galaxy TriFold is scheduled for release later this year, but its impact on Samsung’s overall profits is expected to be limited. This is due to the company’s plan for a restricted production quantity of the device.
