Nanjing University Develops Transparent Coating for Solar-Powered Windows

What if your windows did more than just let in light? Picture the glass in your home or apartment actually making electricity for you. Scientists at Nanjing University in China have made this idea real. They developed a special clear coating. It uses a technology called CUSC, or Colorless and Unidirectional Diffractive-type Solar Concentrator. This coating turns regular windows into solar panels. Best of all, your window stays perfectly clear.

This isn’t about making your window dark. The secret lies in something called Cholesteric Liquid Crystals, or CLCs. These crystals bend some of the sunlight. They guide it to the edges of the windowpane. Small solar cells are installed there. These cells turn the concentrated light into power. Meanwhile, most of the light still shines into your room. It feels just like a normal window.

So, how clear is it? And does it really produce electricity? Tests show this coating lets 64.2% of light through. It also keeps colors very true, with 91.3% accuracy. You can look through the glass and barely notice any change.

What about the power part? Early tests are promising. The coating can convert 18.1% of sunlight into electricity. The research team even built a 1-inch model. They used it to power a small fan.

This tech is still a prototype. Scientists are working to make it more stable. They are also improving how it’s made and how well it converts energy. Even so, this is a big step for our future. It could help us rely less on traditional power sources. It also promises a massive cut in carbon dioxide emissions. Imagine a future where we produce almost no greenhouse gases.
