A sigh of relief could be heard around Cobham this week. Dário Essugo, Chelsea’s promising young midfielder, underwent successful surgery on his right thigh. The club made the announcement recently, confirming the 20-year-old is now on the road to recovery.

Essugo picked up the unfortunate injury while representing Portugal’s U-21 national team. It happened on September 1st, right in the middle of their training camp. This forced him out of important qualifying matches against Azerbaijan and Scotland for the 2027 U-21 European Championship. It was a tough break for a player eager to prove himself.
Chelsea released a statement detailing the situation. “Midfielder Dário Essugo had successful thigh surgery today,” the London club’s website confirmed. “The 20-year-old player suffered the injury while on duty with the Portuguese U-21 national team. Medical examinations showed an operation was needed. Dário will now start his recovery at Cobham, accompanied by the club’s medical department.” This shows the club’s full commitment to his return.
Essugo’s journey to Chelsea has been quite a story. He joined the Blues from Sporting, after spending last season on loan with Las Palmas in Spain. He even debuted for Chelsea during their triumphant Club World Cup campaign, a fantastic start to his time with the club. However, he is still waiting for his first Premier League appearance. He did make the bench for the first three league games, showing he was close to breaking through. Now, his focus shifts entirely to getting back to full fitness and pushing for that debut once again.
