3 dead in Gujarat elections as 44.4°C heatwave kills AAP candidate at polls

A severe 44.4°C heatwave turned deadly across Gujarat on Sunday. Three people died from sudden cardiac arrests during the state’s local body elections. The extreme temperatures hit right in the middle of a volatile political restructuring. Gujarat recently purged 68.13 lakh voters from the electoral rolls and introduced a new 27 percent OBC reservation quota ahead of the polls.

Voters faced peak temperatures of 44.4°C in Surendranagar. Ahmedabad hit 43.8°C. Medical emergencies disrupted the polling process across multiple districts. Authorities confirmed three individuals suffered fatal heart attacks at voting booths.

Among the deceased was 38-year-old Narendrasinh Jadeja. He was the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate contesting from Ward No. 3 in the Jamnagar Municipal Corporation. He collapsed from a cardiac arrest on Sunday morning.

The harsh weather deterred voters in major urban centers. Turnout across the 15 municipal corporations dropped below 50 percent as officials confirmed the death of the Ward No. 3 candidate. The overall statewide participation hovered near 57 percent by the end of the day.

How the Mass Voter Purge and BJP Walkovers Altered the Electoral Math

The deaths occurred against the backdrop of a massive structural shift in Gujarat voting blocks. The ruling BJP already secured 733 uncontested seats before voting even began. This is a massive jump from the 241 uncontested seats they won in 2021. Mass opposition withdrawals left thousands of seats completely unchallenged.

Over 10,005 seats across 15 Municipal Corporations, 84 Municipalities, 34 District Panchayats, and 260 Taluka Panchayats are being contested. The AAP is attempting to push into Saurashtra and South Gujarat. The Congress party is facing its first major test after reorganizing for the upcoming 2027 state assembly elections.

This vote marks a major development in world politics as the ruling BJP consolidates its grip on the local bodies.
