Tens of thousands of people in Pakistan are packing up their lives and leaving home. They are moving to higher ground, racing against rising water. These floodwaters aren’t just from local rains; they are pouring in from India. Pakistan’s government has ordered a swift evacuation for residents in low-lying areas.
The decision to release such a huge volume of water came after days of non-stop, pounding rain. Officials in India confirmed on Tuesday that rivers in Jammu, part of Indian-administered Kashmir, had swollen dangerously high. Forecasters there predicted more rain would fall well into Tuesday evening, adding to the already critical situation.
This crisis brought with it a surprising moment of diplomacy. Just one day before the water began its journey, New Delhi sent a heads-up to Islamabad. They warned their longtime rival about the coming floods. This open message marks the first public contact between the two nuclear-armed neighbors in many months, a rare break in their often-tense relationship.
Interestingly, this flood alert didn’t go through the usual channels. The Indus Water Commission, a standing body set up by the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty with the World Bank’s help, was bypassed. India had put this commission on hold earlier this year. That move followed a brutal terrorist attack in April, which sadly killed 26 tourists in Indian Kashmir.
Looking beyond the immediate crisis, scientists and weather experts point to a larger issue. They say our changing climate is making extreme weather events more common. This region, already prone to heavy rains and droughts, is seeing more unpredictable and intense weather patterns each year, a clear sign of a world in flux.
