Defamation case against BBC, summons issued

A Gujarat-based non-governmental organization ‘Justice on Trial’ has filed a defamation case over the showing of a BBC documentary on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Delhi High Court has now issued summons to appear in that case. Al-Jazeera news

Harish Salvi, a lawyer for the non-governmental organization, feels that the BBC’s 2-episode documentary has defamed India and its judicial system.

The court said the BBC documentary on the role of the state’s then chief minister Modi in the 2002 Gujarat riots defamed India. The defendant was summoned following the plaintiff’s claim that the documentary was made against current Prime Minister Modi.
