Somaliland China: China has become so vocal about Taiwan that it is not shying away from threatening America. In such a situation, it has become difficult for small countries around the world to stand in front of China in this matter. There is one such small and self-declared country in Africa, which has exposed all the polities of China. The name of this country is Somaliland, which was part of the country of Somalia until 1991. Somaliland Foreign Minister Essa Kayad described how China tried to use the crisis in her country to increase its influence there. However, Somaliland understood China’s intentions and canceled the visit of the Chinese diplomat.
Somaliland established diplomatic relations with Taiwan in July 2020, bypassing Chinese threats. Like Taiwan, Somaliland as a country is struggling to gain recognition from other countries and international institutions around the world.
China wanted to use the fire incident
A senior Chinese diplomat had sought permission to see the dead after a fire broke out in a major market in Somaliland. Chinese Ambassador to Somalia Fei Shengchao told Somaliland officials that he wanted to discuss how China could help mitigate the impact of the disaster. The incident was so great that it devastated the economy of Somaliland, which was at that time reeling from the coronavirus pandemic and drought. China wanted to take advantage of this opportunity, it also carried out its plan very carefully.
The Chinese ambassador did something like this
As the visit drew to a close, Chinese Ambassador Fei Shengchao added a few more stops to his itinerary in Somaliland’s capital, Hargeisa. He informed Somaliland that he wanted to meet parliamentarians, opposition leaders and university students during his visit. Such requests from the ambassador made the Somali authorities suspicious. He concluded that China’s agenda was not to discuss emergency aid. Rather, he wanted to break Somaliland’s strained relations with Taiwan.
Chinese diplomat’s visit canceled
Somalia’s Foreign Minister Essa Kayad said it was purely a political visit. After which the government directly told the Chinese ambassador that he could not come to the country. After that this journey never happened. Kayad said in an interview that we thought it was not right. Not because we were scared of someone but because it was different from the agenda we agreed to.
China giving loans to African countries
China is giving so much debt to African countries that they do not have the courage to say no to it. Chinese companies are building major ports, airport terminals and highways in these countries. The biggest thing is that the money for this construction work comes from China in the form of loans. Chinese companies take a large part of this money back to their country as the cost of construction. In this type of work, a large part of the debt is spent on materials used in construction, wages of workers, engineers and technology.
Where is Somaliland located?
Somaliland broke away from Somalia in 1991 and declared itself an independent country. But even today many countries of the world have not recognized Somaliland as an independent country. Most of Somaliland is at peace, while Somalia has been battling civil war for the past three decades. Somaliland is located in the Horn of Africa, bordered by the Gulf of Aden to the north and Djibouti and Ethiopia to the northwest.
