Only Japan still refused to commit. Thanks to a turnaround in the country, the member states of the G7 promised, on Friday May 27, to cease all foreign financing of fossil energy projects without carbon capture techniques, and this by “end of 2022”.
“We are committed to ending, by the end of 2022, all new direct international public aid to the fossil energy sector without carbon capture technology”these states said in a joint statement following a meeting of climate and energy ministers.
To fight against global warming, the G7 countries have also committed to decarbonizing the majority of their electricity sector “by 2035”. “We are committed to achieving a majority carbon-free electricity sector by 2035 (…) and to supporting the acceleration of the global phase-out of coal”they wrote in a joint statement.
