Why thousands of Belgians will have to repay Covid aid

Dirty blow for many Belgian self-employed workers. About 12,000 of them will have to return part of the Covid aid they received in 2021, reports 7 out of 7.

Last weekend, they received an email from the Walloon Region telling them that due to a computer error, they had to reimburse the sum of 250 euros.

3,500 euros instead of 3,250 euros

The Belgian media was able to consult this letter. The administration indicates that due to a “material error at the time of payment”, the people concerned received 3,500 euros on November 20 instead of 3,250, “as part of the measures against the coronavirus”. “We are sincerely sorry for the inconvenience caused. Therefore, we ask you to reimburse us 250 euros by December 20, 2021 at the latest ”, specifies the email.

“We have no other choice legally than to claim the overpayment,” a spokesperson for the organization told 7 out of 7. We extend our sincere apologies to those affected. The error is due to incorrect computer encoding. “
