Schwartzman and Dimitrov go to quarterfinals at Indian Wells

Diego Schwartzman qualified for the first time in his career in the quarterfinals of the Indian Wells tournament on Wednesday, an instance in which Grigor Dimitrov also made an unprecedented position.

Argentine Schwarzman defeated Norwegian Casper Ruud 6-3, 6-3, in a match that required just one hour and 43 minutes to settle on the central court of the Californian desert. He reached 200 victories on the ATP Tour.

“It’s a huge happiness to reach 200 victories on the ATP Tour,” said Schwartzman.

The last time an Argentine had been installed in the round of the best eight of this tournament was in 2018, when Juan Martín del Potro won the title.

Schwartzman, who is participating in the competition for the sixth time, will face Britain’s Cameron Norrie, who defeated local Tommy Paul 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.

Dimitrov beat Russian Daniil Medvedev, the first seed of the tournament, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 to continue the surprises that have characterized this tournament.

Medvedev’s fall left the combined ATP and WTA competition without its top seeds in both arms. Karolina Pliscova succumbed in the third round, while second seed Iga Swiatek was out in the fourth.

Dimitrov will meet Hubert Hurkacz (8th), who defeated Asian Karatsev 6-1, 6-3.

“I always wanted to have a good performance here,” said the Bulgarian. “I feel like I have had many opportunities in different years but I had lost very close matches. Today I showed a lot of determination ”.

Nikoloz Basilashvili and Taylor Fritz also advanced.

In the quarterfinals of the women’s division, Victoria Azarenka defeated local Jessica Pegula 6-4, 6-2. The Belarusian, once at the top of the ladder, will next collide with Jelena Ostapenko, who eliminated another American, Shelby Rogers, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
