90% of menopausal women suffer from hot flashes, dryness or joint pain

The Spanish Association for the Study of Menopause (AEEM) and the Spanish Foundation for the Study of Menopause (FAITH IN) carried out a survey with 1,750 women throughout the national territory at the time of the World Menopause Day, which is celebrated today, October 18th.

The results show that 61.3% of women between 40 and 70 years old have had their last period for a year or more and 8.3% are perimenopause, that is, they have an irregular menstrual cycle and, although they have menstruated for less than a year, they have symptoms of menopause or characteristic menstrual disorders.

Thus, more than half of the women surveyed with menopause (51.7%) indicate that they have joint pain and dryness vulvar or vaginal. The third most common symptom is noticing that the skin is drier (45.5%). fourth is the lack of sexual desire (43.8%) and in fifth, the heat waves (40.9%) which, in addition, is the most intense symptom during the first years of menopause.

Among perimenopausal women, hot flashes are the most frequent symptom (66.4%), in second place is the insomnia, which affects 58.2% of these women and in third place, joint pain and night sweat (54.8%).

Despite these data, only 16.7% of women with menopause receive any treatment: 4% resort to menopause hormone therapy, 5.2% for natural compounds and 5.3% for non-hormonal treatments.

67.2% of women claim to have maintained sexual activity (intercourse or masturbation) despite menopause. This number rises to 81.5% in the case of perimenopausal women.

Age is the variable that most influences sexual activity. 85.5% of women between 40 and 49 years old keep it with the same regularity. This number drops to 74.1% in people between 50 and 59 years old and to 58.6% in women over 60 years old.

94% of women with menopause and perimenopause have heterosexual intercourse and only 3.5% are due to self-stimulation.

Healthy habits

Among women with menopause, 34.5% of those surveyed are in a situation of overweight and 17.4% recognize that they have obesity. In the case of perimenopausal women, these data dropped slightly to 30.8% for overweight and 15.8% for obesity.

77% of women with menopause do exercise regularly (walking for three hours a week, dancing, doing Pilates for two hours or jogging for an hour) compared with 70.5% of perimenopausal women.

In relation to tobacco, 77.2% of menopausal women do not smoke and in perimenopausal women this number reaches 67.2%.
