Zverev defeats Tsitsipas and will be Alcaraz’s rival

Zverev vence a Tsitsipas y será rival de Alcaraz

The German Alexander Zverev, world number 3, beat the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, number 5, 6-4, 3-6 and 6-2, this Saturday in the second semifinal of the Madrid Masters 1000 and will be the rival of the Spanish Carlos Alcaraz on Sunday in the grand finale.

The match won by Zverev ended at the Manuel Santana court of the Caja Mágica in Madrid after 1:00 a.m. local time.

Alcaraz, ninth player in the world at 19 years old, surprised in the first semifinal the first player in the ranking, the Serbian Novak Djokovic, whom he defeated 6-7 (5/7), 7-5 and 7-6 (7/5) . On Friday, in the quarterfinals, Alcaraz had eliminated his compatriot Rafa Nadal.

Zverev, 25, aspires to retain the title he won last year at the Madrid tournament. He then went on to beat Italian Matteo Berrettini in the final, in three sets.

In case of lifting the trophy, the German player will achieve his twentieth title in his thirtieth final. In the Masters 1000 category he has so far played nine finals, with five titles and four defeats.

This year, Zverev lost in the only final he reached, against Kazakh Alexander Bublik on an indoor hard court, last February in Marseille.

Tsitsipas, 23 years old and runner-up last year at Roland Garros, remains at the gates of what would have been his second final in Madrid, after the one he lost in 2019 against Djokovic.

The Greek player, fifth in the world, had been the champion last month in the first Masters 1000 on clay of the season, in Monte Carlo, but could not repeat success in the Spanish capital.
