Zero rate commission is preparing the regulation

The Commission established to authorize the importation of 67 basic products of the family basket it met last week and is working on the preparation of the regulation of the law.

The Commission, which is chaired by the Minister of Agriculture, Limbert Cruz, includes the Ministers of Industry, Commerce and MSMEs, the Mepyd, the Treasury, the Director of Customs and representatives of the productive sector.

The purpose of the law is to seek the supply of the population, so only imports of goods that do not achieve self-sufficiency will be approved, according to explanations in Agriculture.

The commission is in manufacturing processin search of not authorizing the importation of products in surplus, only for those that are in short supply and those that are not produced in the country, including inputs such as soybeans.

The Executive Branch recently enacted the Zero Rate Law for the importation of 67 products of the Dominican basic basket and later issued a decree creating the commission that will be in charge of evaluating and authorizing imports for a period of six months.

The provision generated great debate, especially from the political opposition, which understood that local production would be affected and that low prices are not guaranteed with these imports.

The measure is being applied in other countries such as Colombia and in the face of a possible shortage due to the effects of the Russian war and the rise in freight rates.
