Zelensky Expects Peace to Emerge This Year After Trump Call

In a significant development, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed optimism about the possibility of achieving peace this year, following a telephone conversation with former US President Donald Trump. The discussion, which took place on Wednesday, March 15, was described as positive, direct, and substantial by Zelensky. According to the Ukrainian leader, both parties agreed that Ukraine and the US should continue to work together to achieve a genuine end to the war and a sustainable peace.

“We believe that, together with America, with President Trump, and under American leadership, a lasting peace can be achieved this year,” Zelensky stated. He also touched upon the announcement made by Russian President Vladimir Putin to halt attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, considering it a crucial first step towards ending the war. Zelensky expressed his support for this move and his willingness to enforce it.

However, prior to his conversation with Trump, Zelensky had noted that Putin’s words seemed to contradict reality, as Russia continued to target energy facilities in Ukraine. Meanwhile, the Russian Defense Ministry accused Ukraine of attacking one of its oil storage facilities.

On the other hand, President Trump posted on Truth Social that his conversation with Zelensky, which lasted approximately an hour, was productive. He mentioned that the discussion was largely based on his previous phone call with President Putin, aiming to align Russia’s demands with Ukraine’s needs. Trump added that they were “on the right track.”

Later, White House spokesperson Caroline Levitt revealed more details about the conversation between Trump and Zelensky. According to her, the Ukrainian president thanked the US for its support, particularly with regard to the supply of Javelin missiles. The two leaders also discussed the ongoing fighting in Ukraine’s Kherson region, with Zelensky requesting additional air defense resources.

As the situation evolves, it remains to be seen whether the positive tone struck by Zelensky and Trump will translate into tangible progress towards achieving a lasting peace in the region.
