Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil Reboot: Original Story, Single Protagonist, 2026 Release

Zach Cregger’s name is hot right now. His movie, Weapons, is getting good reviews worldwide. This makes people excited about his other project: a Resident Evil reboot.

Cregger has been talking to many news outlets because of Weapons. Naturally, questions about the Resident Evil film came up. He’s directing and writing this one too. He shared some interesting details about his vision.

He told Inverse that the story will be a "love letter" to the games. It will follow the game’s rules. But it won’t retell stories fans already know. For example, Leon S. Kennedy won’t be in it. Leon’s story is already in the games. So, Cregger will create new, original content. This matches what he said before. He mentioned it wouldn’t be an exact copy. Instead, it would give the same feeling as the game.

He added more details to Variety. The Resident Evil games have unique, strong pacing. They build pressure slowly. They tell stories step by step. Cregger plans to bring this structure to the movie. He will focus on "one character’s journey in Raccoon City." Previous Resident Evil movies or shows often featured many characters. This new film will be different.

Cregger confirmed again to The Hollywood Reporter that the script is fully original.

“This is an original script. It’s a strange story. I wrote it myself and I love it.”

Zach Cregger shared in the interview.

“The story will have nothing to do with other Resident Evil movies. If I achieve what I intend, the movie will feel fresh, raw, and strange.”

The new Resident Evil film by Zach Cregger doesn’t have an official title yet. But it already has a release date: September 18, 2026. We’ll be sure to update you. This includes when we see the first images or a trailer.
