Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil Movie: RE2/3 Era, RE4 Tone, 2026 Release

When a filmmaker with a solid track record takes on a beloved game franchise, ears perk up. Zach Cregger, fresh off his acclaimed work with ‘Weapons,’ is now steering the ship for the next Resident Evil movie. Expectations are running pretty high for this one, and for good reason.

Cregger recently spilled some beans during an interview with the YouTube channel Double Toasted. He talked about making the film and what fans can expect. He promised the movie will really capture the feel of playing the games. The story will happen during the time of Resident Evil 2 and 3. But here’s the twist: it will have the style and mood of Resident Evil 4. That’s a unique blend, for sure. You can check out his full thoughts here: Eurogamer.

He explained his vision this way: “The story in the film will happen in the world that is in the game. But the most important thing is the journey viewers will get from watching the movie will be similar to how viewers play the game until the end.” He added, “And that means ‘it will follow one protagonist from point A to point B that leads us to see deeper and deeper hell.'”

Cregger is clearly pumped to direct this project. He admitted he’s a huge Resident Evil fan, pouring over a thousand hours into playing the games. Funny enough, he’s never actually seen any of the previous Resident Evil films. He sees a natural storytelling rhythm in the games themselves. Cregger truly believes a movie can deliver that same kind of gripping narrative.

What Cregger really likes about Resident Evil is how flexible the series is. Games 2 and 3 kept us in Raccoon City, stuck in a nightmare. Then Resident Evil 4 shipped Leon and players to a whole different country. Resident Evil 7 had a vibe like ‘Texas Chainsaw.’ And the eighth game felt straight out of an old European village from history.

Cregger feels this gives him artistic freedom. He stated, “So the games do not have a fixed storyline. Not fixed at all. Because of that, I don’t think I’m doing anything beyond the franchise. It’s like coloring a picture that has been outlined.”

Fans won’t have to wait too long for this new take on Resident Evil. The movie is set to scare audiences on September 18, 2026.
