In a surprising change of heart, YouTube has abandoned its previous stance of not offering native support for Apple Vision Pro and now says a dedicated app is “on the horizon.”
In January, YouTube announced that it would not develop dedicated apps for Apple Vision Pro, Apple’s new spatial computing headset. It was also reported that it would not allow its iPad apps to run on this device.
However, it didn’t take long for the company to retract that statement.
“We’re excited to launch Vision Pro and support it by ensuring YouTube users have a great Safari experience.”YouTube spokeswoman Jessica Gibby told The Verge in a statement.
Gibby added that “Although they have no concrete plans to share anything at this time, “You can confirm that an application for Vision Pro is on our roadmap.”
No specific time frame has been given for the launch of this application. Currently, YouTube recommends that Apple Vision Pro users visit YouTube via Safari in the meantime.
As The Verge points out, neither Apple nor YouTube have been able to figure out how to support active 360-degree and VR videos on YouTube. Apparently the content may never work on the Apple Vision Pro, as Apple spokeswoman Jackie Roy has explained The content is not of high quality and may cause movement disorders.
