Young Dominicans seek stability in the Major Leagues

Dominican outfielders José Sirí and Leody Taveras are among a handful of Dominican position players looking to establish themselves in the big leagues this season.

Most are very young, in the range of 22 to 25 years. Sirí (.239-10-23 in 113 shifts), only three regular players have a better home run projection than El Rayo (1 home run per 11.3 VB) and has been a key element in the Rays’ great season. If Sirí should reduce something, it is his number of strikeouts (41 of his 86 outs have come that way). Taveras has been vital for the Rangers to have the second best record in MLB (38-20). Leody (.306-3-23) is a few appearances away from making the AL hitters’ list.

Esteury Ruiz (.267-1-25) is the fastest player in all of 2023. With experience in just 17 games entering 2023, the A’s outfielder leads all of baseball in steals (28).

Bryan De La Cruz and Jesús Sánchez have made their contribution to the Marlins’ offense. De La Cruz (.299-7-26) has one of the best averages in the Nacional, getting the title in his third season in the Majors.

Sanchez, a former top-ranking prospect (.302-4-12) has been in action more regularly in recent weeks.

Luis García, the youngest of the group, is one of the few bright spots on the Washington team this season. Luisito (.267-5-25), turned 23 in May, became the first player born in 2000 to hit a home run in the Majors (in August 2020).

Ezequiel Durán, 23 (.267-9-15), in his second season, has impressed with his power since his promotion to MLB after battering the Minors the first month of the season.

Like Leody Taveras, Ezequiel Durán is another of the important elements in the great campaign of the Rangers. Durán (.307-7-23), 24, has made the SS title in his second season in MLB. Geraldo Perdomo (.279-5-26) has impressed in Arizona.

Other young Dominican players excel in the Majors, but this core has arrived with all the talent to establish itself in the 2023 season.
