South Korea is on the cusp of a new era. Yoon Suk-yeol’s tumultuous presidency ended in April after he was impeached. Now, Lee Jae-myung is set to take the reins. The Democratic Party candidate won a surprise victory in the snap presidential election.
Lee’s campaign focused on fixing the economy and ensuring national security. He promised to get to work on day one. “I won’t forget the two tasks you’ve given me,” he told supporters. “I’ll do them with care.”
The election result showed Lee with 48.37% of the vote, while his opponent, Kim Mun-su, trailed behind with 42.93%. Kim conceded defeat, congratulating Lee on his win.
Lee’s victory speech highlighted the importance of democracy and national unity. “Tonight’s result proves that power comes from the people,” he said. “We’ve shown that power shouldn’t be used for personal gain, but for the country’s bright future.”
He vowed to restore democracy and boost the economy. “My first task is to revive democracy, and my second task is to revive the economy,” Lee said. “From the moment I’m confirmed as president, I’ll use all my strength to restore your livelihoods as quickly as possible.”
On the issue of national security, Lee pledged to bring peace to the Korean peninsula and engage in dialogue with North Korea. “Building peace is the surest way to achieve security,” he said, urging South Koreans to learn to live together in harmony.
Kim, the defeated candidate, also addressed his supporters, acknowledging the election result and thanking them for their backing. He congratulated Lee on his win, marking a peaceful transfer of power.
The election comes after a period of turmoil in South Korean politics. Former President Yoon Suk-yeol’s decision to declare martial law in December sparked controversy, leading to his impeachment in April. The snap election was called to fill the power vacuum.
