Yograj Singh, father of cricket legend Yuvraj Singh, is fuming over the retirement of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma from Test cricket. He believes they could have easily played for another five years. Their sudden exit from the format has sent shockwaves through the cricket world, especially with India’s England tour just around the corner.
In a chat with Inside Sport, Yograj Singh expressed his disappointment, saying, “Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma should not have retired from Test cricket. I told Rohit to wake up at 5 am and run 20 kilometers to stay fit. They can still play Test cricket for another five years.” He feels they should have continued playing until the younger players were ready to take over.
Yograj Singh also pointed out that the legacy has not been passed on smoothly. “They should have stayed in the team until the young players were ready to take over, just like Sourav Ganguly did. The legacy has not moved forward; it has been thrown at Shubman Gill.” He thinks Gill has been thrust into the captain’s role too soon.
Speaking of Gill, he has been appointed captain of the Indian Test team after Rohit Sharma’s retirement, with Rishabh Pant as his deputy. This will be Gill’s first stint as captain, and he’ll lead the team in the upcoming series against England. Gill was already named vice-captain in the ODI format.
