The Yankees capitalized on two catcher’s interference, a hit batter and a walk to mount a six-run seventh inning and Josh Donaldson hit a go-ahead two-run double to put New York on the road to a win on Saturday. Monday 9-5 over the Oakland Athletics, who have the worst record in the majors.
Oakland jumped to a 5-1 lead over Jordan Montgomery thanks to Elvis Andrus’ three-run double during a five-run third inning.
Giancarlo Stanton’s homer in the fourth and Aaron Judge’s RBI single in the next inning led the Yankees, holders of the best record in the major leagues, to their 23rd come-from-behind victory this year.
DJ LeMahieu walked Adam Oller with one out in the seventh inning. Judge grounded to third base, which could have been a double play, but head umpire Manny Gonzalez immediately called Sean Murphy’s interference.
AJ Puk (1-1) hit Anthony Rizzo with his first pitch to load the bases before Stanton fouled out on a 1-0 count. Yankees manager Aaron Boone requested a play review which resulted in another interference by Murphy that cut the deficit to 5-4.
Donaldson followed with an 0-2 double to left field to make it 9-5 and José Treviño followed with another two-run double off Austin Pruitt before scoring on Marwin González’s single.
Albert Abreu (1-0) struck out four in 2 1/3 scoreless innings for the win.
