Uruguayan Presidential Candidate to Meet with Spanish Government Head
Uruguay’s Broad Front presidential candidate, Yamandú Orsi, is set to meet with Spanish President Pedro Sánchez on Monday, July 15, at 1:00 p.m. at the headquarters of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) in Madrid.
Orsi’s Vacation Plans
Before the meeting, Orsi will be taking a vacation to Spain with his family. He left Uruguay on July 5 on an Iberia flight, and is expected to return on July 17. During his time in Spain, he plans to visit multiple cities with his loved ones.
Previous Ties with Spain
Orsi has previously had dealings with the Spanish government. In December 2023, he met with the Spanish ambassador to Uruguay, Santiago Jiménez Martín, to discuss deepening the relationship between Spain and the Canelones department. The meeting aimed to explore specific areas of cooperation, including environmental management, climate change, gender policies, and trade and investment initiatives.
Spanish Government Involvement
The meeting on Monday will be attended by other leaders in addition to Sánchez, who is also the general secretary of the PSOE. In 2022, the president of the Frente Amplio, Fernando Pereira, held meetings with representatives of the PSOE and Unidos Podemos, stating that it is necessary for the left to continue governing in Spain.
This development comes as Orsi seeks to strengthen ties with international partners ahead of the presidential election. The meeting with Sánchez will likely focus on areas of mutual interest and cooperation between Uruguay and Spain.
