Tech giant Xiaomi recently drove into a new lane, making a big splash in the electric car world. In China, their new vehicles are a huge hit. But folks outside of China have been eagerly waiting for these cars to arrive in other countries. The company’s CEO confirmed they do plan to sell these vehicles globally.
Xiaomi had previously hinted at 2027 as the year they might start shipping electric cars beyond China. This news came from reports by Reuters. Just this past Wednesday, the company’s chief executive, Lei Jun, reinforced that timeline during a live broadcast. He shared that Xiaomi will only consider selling cars abroad in about two more years.
It makes sense why Xiaomi is holding back on global sales for now. According to Lei Jun, the company needs to focus on its home market first. They have a massive list of orders for their electric SU7 and YU7 cars.
Their SU7 electric sedan has actually outsold Tesla’s Model 3 on a monthly basis since December. And the sporty YU7 also racked up a record number of orders right after it launched. This huge demand has been a double-edged sword. We’ve heard that all these orders have led to delivery delays. Some customers have even expressed their unhappiness and complained about waiting too long for their new vehicles.
So, for now, Xiaomi is playing catch-up at home. Once they manage the demand within China, then they’ll look to bring their electric cars to the rest of us. You can read more about Lei Jun’s statements on this here: Reuters.
