Xiaomi misses ‘assault’ on global leadership and loses second place

After Counterpoint Research released the latest data from the mobile market in China, International Data Corporation (IDC) released global figures for the third quarter of the year.

One of the biggest curiosities for this last quarter would be to realize how far Xiaomi could grow and ‘steal’ the global market leadership from Samsung. This not only did not happen, Xiaomi lost the second position.

Xiaomi loses second place overall to Apple

Xiaomi not only lost ground to Samsung in global markets, it was overtaken by Apple in second place. During this period, Samsung recorded 20.8% market share, with 69 million shipments. South Korean technology had a 14.2% drop in one year.

Second, Apple posted the largest increase. The Cupertino-based manufacturer had 50.4 million shipments and a 15.2% market share. Compared to the same period last year, it was up 20.2%.

Xiaomi celebrates 44.3 million shipments this quarter, which translates into a market share of 13.4%. Compared to the same period in 2020, the manufacturer ends up breaking 4.6%.

Outside the podium we find Vivo and Oppo technically tied. Vivo appears in fourth position, with 33.3 million shipments and a 10.1% market share. Right behind, we find Oppo with 33.2 million presentations and a market share of 10.0%.

For the rest of the unspecified manufacturers, there is still 30.5% of the market share. These total 101.1 million presentations in this period.

In total, 331.2 million units of smartphones will have been shipped during the third quarter of 2021. Analysts expected a drop of 2.9 compared to the same period last year, but this was 6.7%.
