Xiaomi EV Sales Top 30,000 Again in August Amid Surging Demand

Xiaomi, the company many know for smartphones, is now making serious waves in the electric car market. Their electric vehicle division, Xiaomi EV, just announced a massive win: over 30,000 cars sold in August. This isn’t a fluke; it’s their second month in a row hitting such impressive numbers.

These sales figures are quite telling. While Xiaomi kept the exact August numbers under wraps, they confirmed sales matched July’s strong performance. In July, they delivered 30,452 vehicles to customers. This was a healthy jump, nearly 20% more than the 25,459 units sold in June, according to the Chinese Passenger Car Association (CPCA). For now, these sales are only happening in China.

The YU7 Drives Demand

A big reason for this explosion in sales is the Xiaomi YU7. This is their first electric SUV, and it’s clearly a hit. It’s designed to go head-to-head with cars like the Tesla Model Y. After its reveal on June 26, the YU7 took the market by storm.

It racked up an astonishing 200,000 pre-orders in just three minutes. Within 18 hours, that number climbed to over 240,000. People clearly want this car, and they want it now.

A Good Problem to Have

Such huge demand, however, has created a peculiar problem for Xiaomi. Their factories are struggling to keep up. It’s a classic case of having too much success too fast. Customers eager for a YU7 might face waiting times of up to 56 weeks. That’s more than a year!

Even Lei Jun, Xiaomi’s CEO and co-founder, openly suggested that impatient buyers should look at competitor vehicles if they couldn’t wait so long. Talk about a company CEO sending customers elsewhere!

To tackle this backlog, Xiaomi is pulling out all the stops. They’ve launched a massive hiring spree for the second phase of their Beijing factory. The goal is simple: ramp up mass production as quickly as possible. The company is working hard to meet a demand that far outstripped even their most hopeful predictions.
