Xi Jinping and Donald Trump Hold First Direct Call Amid Trade War

Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump had a phone call. It was their first direct talk since the US started a trade war with China. Xi got the call from Trump on June 5.
The Chinese news agency Xinhua reported this, but didn’t say what they talked about. The US White House hasn’t said anything about the call either.
China and the US have been having problems. They disagree on trade and student visas. Recently, they accused each other of cheating on a deal to lower tariffs.
In May, China and the US agreed to lower tariffs on each other’s goods by 15% for 90 days. But last week, Trump said China broke this deal. China’s Ministry of Commerce said the US is imposing many restrictions on China, including taking away Chinese students’ visas.
On Wednesday, Trump said on Truth Social that he likes Xi, but Xi is “very tough” and hard to make deals with. When asked about Trump’s comment, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said China’s principle and stance on developing China-US relations remain unchanged.
