The AI world just got a bit more intense. Elon Musk’s xAI startup is suing a former engineer, Li Xuechen. The company claims Li stole valuable secrets about its Grok chatbot. These secrets, xAI says, ended up with OpenAI, Li’s new employer.
Court documents from xAI paint a picture of high-stakes corporate espionage. The lawsuit states Li took secret information related to special AI technology. This tech reportedly had features that worked even better than what ChatGPT offered. Li joined xAI last year and played a key part in making and training Grok.
According to xAI, Li took these trade secrets in July. This happened shortly after he agreed to take a new job at OpenAI. The company also pointed out that Li sold xAI shares worth $7 million around the same time. xAI believes these stolen secrets could give OpenAI an unfair advantage, potentially making ChatGPT’s AI tools smarter and more creative.
The legal battle also highlights a key meeting on August 14. During this discussion, Li reportedly admitted to taking the data. He also tried to hide his actions. xAI claims it found even more stolen information on Li’s devices.
Now, xAI is asking the court for several things. They want money to cover the damages caused by the alleged theft. They also want a court order to stop Li from working for OpenAI altogether.
