Portuguese table tennis hopes at the WTT Star Contender Muscat ended Thursday after Olympian Jieni Shao was eliminated in the second round, ensuring no national players advanced further in the tournament.
Shao, ranked 56th globally, lost 3-1 to Singapore’s Zeng Jian, the 14th seed and world No. 39.
The match lasted 29 minutes, with set scores of 11-5, 11-5, 9-11, and 11-6.
Shao’s defeat followed the earlier exit of fellow Portuguese player Fu Yu.
Fu Yu was knocked out in the singles competition on Wednesday by Sweden’s Christina Kallberg.
Both Shao and Fu Yu also failed to advance in the doubles event, having been eliminated in the first round.
They lost to the Indian pair Diya Chitale and Swastika Ghosh.
