An underdog team has stunned the reigning champions to secure a spot in the Grand Final of the 2025 League of Legends World Championship, marking a major upset in the global esports arena.
KT Rolster, considered the less favored contender, defeated the formidable Gen.G in a best-of-five series with a decisive 3-1 score. The match took place on Saturday.
Gen.G entered the tournament as the first seed from South Korea’s LCK league. They had a dominant year, having previously secured victories at the Mid-Season Invitational and the Esports World Cup. Their strong performance made them widely tipped as the favorites to claim the World Championship title.
KT Rolster, conversely, qualified for Worlds 2025 as the third seed from the LCK region. Despite their lower seeding, the team had maintained an impressive record throughout the tournament, not dropping a single map in any of their previous series until this semi-final clash.
The victory sends KT Rolster directly to the championship final. This outcome has surprised many in the League of Legends community, who had largely expected Gen.G to advance.
