World Cup 2022: a man with a rainbow flag enters the pitch during the match Portugal-Uruguay

This is the first time that a match has been marked by such an intrusion since the start of the World Cup organized in Qatar. A man wearing a rainbow flag and wearing a T-shirt in support of Iranian women and Ukraine entered the lawn of the Lusail Stadium in Doha on Monday (November 28th) during the match between the Portugal and Uruguay.

In the 52nd minute of the match, after running across the pitch for about 30 seconds in front of the players, the young man was tackled to the ground by a steward and then calmly escorted by security out of the stadium. He wore a t-shirt stamped on the front with the Superman logo with an inscription in support of Ukraine, “Save Ukraine” (“Save Ukraine”), and on the back a message asking for respect for women Iranian women (“Respect for Iranian Woman”).

No comment from organizers and Fifa

The scene was only shown briefly on television. Asked by AFP, the local organizers referred to Fifa, which itself referred to the local organizers and the Qatari authorities. Also questioned by AFP, the latter did not react. If FIFA assured that flags or clothing in support of LGBT people would be accepted in the stadiums, in fact, these have been confiscated on several occasions by the security forces.

“We know what is happening around this World Cup. Of course we are with them, with Iran too, Iranian women, so I hope nothing will happen to this boy, because that we understand his message, and I think the world understands it too”Portuguese player Ruben Neves said after the match.
