Reigning world champions Sporting Clube de Portugal began their domestic league campaign with a surprising 2-2 draw against underdog Sanjoanense, with players pointing to fatigue from recent international triumphs as a factor.
The unexpected result unfolded at Sporting’s home ground, Pavilhão João Rocha, as the freshly crowned world champions and Supercup winners struggled to secure a victory. Sporting’s Nolito Romero had a critical opportunity to seal a win with a direct free shot after time expired, but failed to convert.
Sanjoanense, whose coach described the team as “humble” and aiming for league survival, showcased remarkable resilience. Player Hugo Santos, who scored twice for the visitors, stated his team “could have even won.”
The match remained scoreless for the entire 25-minute first half. Rafa Bessa eventually broke the deadlock for Sporting in the second half.
Hugo Santos then equalized for Sanjoanense before scoring his second goal from a direct free shot, briefly putting his team ahead. Nolito Romero later netted Sporting’s equalizer before missing the decisive final shot.
Sporting’s Edo Bosch attributed the team’s performance to a “lack of pace” and “finishing freshness,” suggesting they were “paying the price” for their recent World Championship participation in Argentina. He added he had expected the fatigue to manifest later in the season.
Rafa Bessa of Sporting expressed disappointment, stating the team had wanted to start the championship with a win. Sanjoanense coach Reinaldo Ventura, however, felt the draw was a fair result. He indicated his team was already looking ahead to their next match.
