World Boxing Championship: Nishant Dev enters second round, Chahar falls despite strong performance

Belgrade. Newcomer Nishant Dev (71kg) became the seventh Indian boxer to reach the second round of the AIBA Men’s World Championship on Wednesday with a convincing 5-0 win over Hungarian László Kozak here. Dev will now face Mauritius’s Mervain Clare, who got a bye in the first round. Dev started the day well for India.

But another rookie boxer, Lakshya Chahar (86 kg), lost to Kim Hyeongkyu of Korea, as the bout had to stop in the second round. Indian boxer Chahar suffered a cut on his forehead and medical help was sought. But he bled again and the fight stopped.

Chahar won the first round 4-1, but when the match was stopped, the judges changed it in favor of the Korean boxer. India’s High Performance Director Santiago Nieva expressed his displeasure at the decision, which also surprised Chahar. Sumit (75kg) and Narender Berwal (above 92kg) entered the second round with impressive victories in their weight classes last night.

Sumit beat Jamaican Damon O’Neill 5-0, while Narender beat Polish Oskar Safrayan 4-1. Sumit will face Abdullik Boltaev of Tajikistan, while Berwal will face Mohamed Kendeh of Sierra Leone. Four other boxers have already entered the second round of their weight classes, including Asian medalists Shiv Thapa (63.5kg) and Deepak Bohria (51kg).

Varinder Singh will now face Karen Tonakanayan of Armenia in the 60kg first round. Govind Sawhney (48 kg) is the other Indian who will face Ecuadorian Billy Arias on Wednesday.
