Worker Electrocuted Sparking Nationwide Five-Day Labor Protest Action

A 20-year-old worker lost his life on Monday in Suárez, Cannelloni, prompting the construction and annexes union, Sunka, to call for a nationwide strike. The incident occurred when the young worker, employed by a company hired by Antel, received an electric shock while performing tasks at height alongside another worker operating a crane. The victim died instantly at the scene.

Industry-Wide Strike

In response to the tragedy, Sunka has announced a four-hour industry-wide strike on Wednesday, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The strike is a call to action, urging the government and industry leaders to take immediate action to address the dire need for improved occupational health and safety measures.

National Dialogue and Legislative Action

Sunka is advocating for a national dialogue on occupational health and safety, emphasizing the urgent need for a comprehensive national law to regulate these issues. Furthermore, the union is demanding the creation of a specialized prosecutor’s office to investigate work accidents and ensure accountability.
