Woodruff strikes out 8, Brewers outlast Pirates

Brandon Woodruff struck out eight in six scoreless innings to lead the Milwaukee Brewers to a 2-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday afternoon.

Woodruff (7-3) gave up six hits, his most since May 9, but made up for it with a fifth straight start in which he didn’t allow more than two earned runs. The right-hander has 18 strikeouts in 11 innings since he returned June 28 after sitting out with Raynaud’s syndrome, which decreased blood flow to his fingers.

Omar Narvaez gave the Brewers their two runs when he hit a pitch off Pirates starter Zach Thompson (3-6) in the fifth over the Clemente Wall in far right field. The home run, which almost went into the Allegheny River, was his third of the season and ended a 25-game drought.

Josh Hader struck out two and flied out Bryan Reynolds with the bases loaded in the ninth for his 25th save.

For the Brewers, the Dominican Willy Adames 3-1. The Mexican Luis Urías 4-1. Venezuelan Omar Narváez 3-1 with runs scored and two RBIs.

For the Pirates, the Dominican Oneil Cruz 4-0. Puerto Rican Michael Pérez 3-1. The Venezuelans Diego Castillo 1-0, Tucupita Marcano 3-0.
