Women in Spain reportedly earn less than men

Women in Spain earn 5,000 euros less per year than men and to achieve equal pay they would have to earn 24.8% more.

This emerges from a report published by the Ministry of Finance (Gestha) technicians as part of the Equal Pay Day celebrations.

The study concluded that if the pace continues between 1999 and 2022, it would take 25 years to close this wage gap.

For the technicians of the Ministry of Finance, the increase in the wage gap should “activate the commitment and decisions of the authorities, because if the increase between 2020 and 2021 was 120 euros, this time it is more than double.”

The places in Spain where this pay gap between men and women is most evident

The Community of Madrid has the largest pay gap, with a difference of 31.5%, followed by the Principality of Asturias (31%) and Aragon (27.9%).

The regions with the smallest gap, however, are the Canary Islands (11.3%), the Autonomous City of Melilla (15.5%), the Balearic Islands (16.4%) and Extremadura (19.6%).

In terms of sectors, financial institutions and insurance companies would continue to have the largest income differences between men and women, with a difference of 15,913 euros per year.

Gestha Secretary José María Mollinedo said it is important to promote women’s participation in the labor market to reduce the barriers they face in accessing better salaries.

“The gradual increase in the minimum wage helps to narrow the pay gap, but it is also necessary to continue to promote greater female participation in the workplace and a culture change to break partisanship and the glass ceiling through more egalitarian career advancement,” he emphasized
