Uruguay’s Former Minister of Public Health, Daniel Salinas, appeared at the Prosecutor’s Office this Tuesday to testify as a witness in the ongoing Casa de Galicia fraud case.

Salinas reportedly stated that the defense attorney, Prosecutor Gilberto Rodríguez, and he agreed to keep the testimony confidential, citing delicate issues that must remain private.

Government’s Involvement in Closure of Mutual Fund

When asked about the government’s potential influence on the closure of the mutual fund, Salinas clarified that the shutdown was a direct result of the president of Casa de Galicia’s request for voluntary bankruptcy and the subsequent decision by the bankruptcy judge. The Ministry of Public Health simply ensured the continuity of healthcare services.

Background on the Case

The prosecutor leading the investigation, Gilberto Rodríguez, is investigating allegations of bankruptcy fraud and corporate insolvency against former Casa de Galicia president Alberto Iglesias. Iglesias is accused of issuing bad checks to pay creditors, with some still awaiting payment. The mutual fund has been closed, and members have been transferred to other companies.
