Edinson Cavani came on for change and salvaged a point for Manchester United after a clumsy performance in Monday’s 1-1 draw against Newcastle in the Premier League.
In their first meeting in 16 days after a coronavirus outbreak within the team forced two games to be postponed, United were outmatched in the first half and Allan Saint-Maximin gave Newcastle the lead in the 7th minute in a counterattack play after Raphael Varane lost the ball.
Uruguayan Cavani entered at halftime and revolutionized United’s attack. He scored the tying goal in the 71st minute by taking advantage of a goalkeeper’s rebound of his opening shot.
Newcastle substitute Dwight Gayle’s shot hit the post in the final minutes, leaving the team failing for just their second win of the season, remaining in the penultimate position of the standings.
United, meanwhile, is seventh and lost the opportunity to climb to fifth place. His performance made it clear that the team still has a lot of work to do with new manager Ralf Rangnick.
