Winthrop University: First College Team Qualifies for VALORANT VCT Ascension Americas

History just got made in the world of competitive gaming. For the first time ever, a university team will compete in the VCT Ascension Americas. That’s a big deal. Winthrop University, located in South Carolina, locked in its spot just last Tuesday.

This achievement means a college squad is now on the pathway to the top tier of VALORANT esports. The VCT Ascension Americas is a championship. It gives teams a shot at joining the elite VCT Americas league in 2026. This move shows how much college-level esports has grown.

Winthrop earned their spot after a nail-biting turn of events. They secured qualification when the team QoR lost to TSM. This match was the lower bracket final of the Challengers 2025: North America ACE Stage 3. Winthrop finished third overall in the point standings. Because of this, they will start the Ascension competition in a special play-in phase. Two other teams will join them there, but those teams are not yet known. The two best teams from this play-in will move on to the main event.

The Ascension tournament serves a clear purpose. It moves one team from the Tier 2 level up to the big leagues of VALORANT on the continent. This means joining VCT Americas. The competition is set to officially kick off on October 10. It will run for a week, wrapping up on October 17. Right now, Team Solid is the only Brazilian team confirmed to play. Two more Brazilian teams will get their chance through the Last Chance Qualifier (LCQ), which begins this Thursday.
