Windows 10 defends its role as the most used operating system on desktop PCs and laptops. However, there is a slight downward trend.
Windows 10: Because in January 2024, Windows 10 was installed on 66.47 percent of all computers recorded by Statcounter. In August 2023, Windows 10’s market share was still 71.94 percent. Since then, Windows 10 has continually lost ground. On the other hand, Windows 10 only had just over 71 percent market share in the summer of 2023 and increased thereafter. In this respect, slight fluctuations are normal.

In March 2023, Windows 10’s market share was 73.46 percent. But before that, in January 2023, Windows 10 only had 68.86 percent market share. By the way, that was a low point for Windows: Windows is losing more and more market share to these competitors.
Windows 11: Just as Windows 10 shows a slight downward trend in the long term, Windows 11 can gain market share in the long term. From 18.12 percent in January 2023 to 27.83 percent in January 2024.

But if you consider that modern computers are usually delivered with Windows 11 and that companies in particular sometimes convert all PCs to Windows 11 in one go, then Windows 10’s still large lead is astonishing.
All other Windows versions no longer play a role.
Windows gains, macOS loses
If you compare Windows installations recorded by all Statcounter, regardless of the version number, with the market share of macOS, you can see another interesting development in the last few months: Windows has recently been gaining again and will have a 73 percent market share in January 2024. In September and October 2023 it was still under 69 percent and in April and May 2023 it was even under 63 percent. Previously, in January 2023, Windows reached 74.14 percent. After some ups and downs, Windows appears to be solidifying again, which is mainly thanks to the recent growth in Windows 11.
Apple’s macOS operating system has been growing almost constantly since 2009. In January 2023, macOS had a 15.33 percent market share and has been steadily gaining since then. The peak in June 2023 was 21.32 percent market share. This was followed by a phase of stagnation and after November 2023 macOS lost market share again and was at 16.11 percent in January 2024.
All other operating systems are irrelevant for desktop and notebook. Linux, for example, was just 3.77 percent in January 2024.

Windows 10 doesn’t give Windows 11 a chance
