Wi-Fi7 (IEEE 802.11be Extremely High Throughput EHT) is the next WLAN standard. It promises even more bandwidth and speed. Intel raves about the benefits of Wi-Fi 7: “Consumers will soon experience a quantum leap in wireless performance. From 8K video streaming to immersive VR experiences, users around the world will enjoy a whole new level of increased speed and reduced latency.”
But first of all, you need devices that support Wi-Fi 7. And operating systems with Wi-Fi 7 support. Windows 7 is making progress in this regard. Wi-Fi 7 support is now integrated for the first time in the latest Windows 11 test version for insiders from the Canary Channel, as well as in the latest build for the Dev Channel. The Canary Channel is the most experimental of all test channels for Windows 11 and is the first to introduce innovations. In other words: It will probably take some time before Wi-Fi 7 support is included in the final Windows 11 version.
Microsoft writes in its support document for Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26063 (Canary Channel):
Some of the new features of Wi-Fi 7 at a glance:
Multi-Link Operation (MLO) allows devices to use multiple bands (2.4 GHz, 5 GHz and/or 6 GHz) simultaneously to avoid network congestion and maintain connectivity.
320 MHz ultra-wide bandwidth in 6 GHz doubles the speed for your devices and opens up new possibilities for high-bandwidth applications – and scenarios like AR/VR.
4096 QAM modulation increases data transmission by 20% and improves the quality of video streaming, video conferencing and more.
With Wi-Fi 7, you’ll enjoy multi-gigabit speeds on your Windows PC, experiencing speeds up to four times faster than Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E, and nearly six times faster than Wi-Fi 5. You’ll also benefit from Significantly lower latency, improving the responsiveness and performance of real-time activities such as gaming and video conferencing. Please note that performance may vary depending on the manufacturer and hardware configuration of the device.
The last note from Microsoft is important because of course you need the right hardware for Wi-Fi 7.
