Windows 11 Bug Turns Games Red: Microsoft Releases Fix

Microsoft has issued a fix for a visual bug in Windows 11 that caused games and videos to display with an unexpected reddish tint, following user reports of disrupted viewing experiences.

The issue stemmed from an optional update, KB5064081, which was released in August. Users began noticing abnormal screen colors while playing games or watching videos after installing this package.

Microsoft formally acknowledged the problem, stating that “some videos and games may appear unexpectedly red” post-installation. The company also noted a related bug affecting partial screen updates when full-screen applications were active.

The defect was primarily linked to how the system rendered colors, especially in setups utilizing High Dynamic Range (HDR) or advanced color profiles. It appeared to interfere with the operating system’s video and monitor pipeline, altering color mapping.

A corrective update, KB5067036, has now been released by Microsoft. This patch addresses both the red color issue and the partial screen update problem.

Users are advised to check if KB5064081 or any related August updates are installed on their systems. If the bug is present, installing KB5067036 should resolve it.

As a temporary measure, some users found relief by disabling HDR or switching color profiles. For gaming setups, experts suggest deferring optional or “preview” updates until their stability is confirmed to avoid similar visual disruptions. Additionally, updating GPU drivers may help mitigate the effect if the bug is already present.
